Product of the week - Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented drink that's full of probiotic goodness, perfect for restoring and maintaining a health gut flora.

Just quickly... a well balanced gut flora means a health digestive system, immune system, improved mood, easier weight management and over all good functioning of the body.

So it's made by adding a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeasts) to brewed green or black tea. Sugar is also added as culture food. This is left to ferment for 10-14 days which results in your probiotic beverage. Most of the time, you'll put it through a second ferment where flavours, usually spices and fruits, are added, and it's left to carbonate with the lid on. The end result is a delicious fizzy drink teaming with good bacteria.

You can buy a scoby online or get on off someone in your local community (just do a Facebook shout out and someone will know what you're talking about) and make it yourself. OR you can buy it already made in many health food stores and cafes now. When making it yourself, do a bit of reading up first, watching YouTube videos are great!

I love love love doing workshops on fermented products. Keep your eyes peels for my new workshop timetable coming out really soon because I'll definitely be doing one on kombucha and other fermented drinks.

Some popular brands include Mojo, Remedy, Kombucha Max, The Good Brew, but they're loads more.  Here in Ballarat you'll find it at Go Vita, Boah Organic, The Paleo Cafe and Wilson's Fruit and Veg.

Have you tried kombucha? Do you make it yourself? What's your favourite brand? and your favourite flavour? I'd love to know.

Hayley xoxo
