Product of the week - Milk Kefir!

Milk what? Yeah I know, it sounds weird. Most people may not have heard of this strange but amazing food. So let me tell you a little bit about it.

Milk Kefir is a wonderful probiotic drink made with kefir grains (the culture) and milk! It can also be made with coconut milk. It's kind of like yoghurt but more runny, has a slightly different flavour and has different strain of beneficial bacteria. Having different strains means it has different therapeutic qualities. 

What's it good for? It's really good for rebalancing and maintaining a healthy gut because it contains about 30 different strains of beneficial bacteria, which is way more than yoghurt! It also contains decent amounts of calcium, Vitamins B2, B12, D and Phosphorus. You should have a variety of probiotic foods and drinks in your diet to have the right balance of good bugs supporting you.

How do you use it? You can drink it or mix it with your granola, althought, it can be fairly runny. I usually just add a few tablespoons to my morning smoothie. Remember, start off with a small amount, like 1 tbsp per day, working your way up to as much as you like over a few weeks.  

Where do you get it? I love the Blue Bay one which I get that from my local Go Vita store. Most health food shops should have it. Alternatively, you can purchase some milk kefir grains off the internet and try making some yourself! It's really easy.
